About Us
Hi, I'm Sarah...
When I started teaching my son to read, I thought it would be a piece of cake.
After all, I had a degree in education and over a decade of classroom experience. What could possibly go wrong?
I started teaching my son how to read using a popular homeschool reading program, and at first it was working- he was learning to read!
But then...
Once he could read a few words, it stopped working. The lessons started to get longer and longer.
And he started to get more and more frustrated.
Soon, he was crying every day when it was time to practice reading.
I was watching his love of reading disappear right before my eyes, and it was breaking my heart.
I knew I needed to do something different so I could teach him how to read AND make reading fun for him at the same time.
So I tried everything...
- Switching to a different curriculum (but honestly, if you've seen one boring phonics curriculum, you've seen them all)
- Adding in some readers (but they were boring too and most didn't even make sense—why bother?)
- Finding "fun books" he would like (but most were too hard, and all he did was guess the words)
I kept thinking to myself: There must be an easier way to actually teach a child to read, while still helping them love reading at the same time!
And that's when it hit me!
My son and I could read TOGETHER!
I created simple books where I would read most of the story (the challenging parts) on my pages, while he read just the few words he knew on his pages. Suddenly, he was experiencing the joy of reading a real story—not just disconnected words on flashcards.
And this time, I finally started to see the results I'd been wanting for my son:
- He was learning and remembering more words, in less time, thanks to science-backed strategies
- He stopped guessing and started sounding out words he didn't know
- He started reading real stories that motivated him to want to read more
- And all of this happened in just 10 minutes a day (and with a new baby in the house!)
And the best part?
My son was excited to learn how to read again!
Once he knew that his reading lessons would allow us to read fun stories together, he was begging to practice—even on weekends!
That struggling, tearful reader transformed into a confident book lover who now reads under the covers with a flashlight because he just can't put his book down.
Why This Matters For Your Family
As an Orton-Gillingham trained reading specialist and a homeschool mom who's been exactly where you are, I understand both the science of how children learn to read AND the emotional reality of teaching your own child.
I know what it's like to watch your child struggle, to question whether you're doing it right, and to worry that you might be damaging their love of reading forever.
That's why I've created the Reading Better Together Shop—to give you the tools, support, and confidence to teach your child to read without the tears, frustration, or hours of preparation.
Whether you're just starting your homeschool journey or you've been at it for years, whether reading lessons currently end in tears or you're just trying to prevent them, I'm here to help you transform your child's reading experience from a daily battle into precious connection time.
You ARE your child's best teacher. And I'm here to help you every step of the way.

"IT IS A SUCCESS!!! He truly gets it! I’ve tried 4 curriculums now. The previous one to this one worked well, but he didn’t love it. But your curriculum is perfect! I can’t thank you enough for this curriculum. It’s given him AND me the confidence in homeschooling."

"I just got this and my daughter has loved learning with it already and has been able to blend words so much better from just one short lesson, I highly recommend!"
